Online Therapy: The Pros and Cons
Every day, it seems like something new is available in an online format.
From high-quality movies, to concert live streams, to virtual doctor’s appointments, almost everything you need to do can be done from the comfort of your own home.
Therapy is no exception – almost every therapist you meet will now offer some sort of online appointment option.
But is online therapy as good as in-person therapy? And is it the right choice for you?
Here at KMA Therapy, we know you want to be informed in order to make the best choices for your lifestyle, needs, and personality. For over 14 years, we’ve created customized treatment plans for our clients, based on the best therapy options for their unique situations.
After reading this article, you’ll know what happens during online therapy, what issues it can help treat, and how to know if it’s the right choice for you.
What Happens During Online Therapy?
Online therapy works similarly to traditional in-person therapy, with sessions typically ranging from 50 minutes to an hour.
When you sign up for therapy, you’ll be sent a link to click on when it’s time to enter your session.
Your first online therapy session will cover topics including:
- Why you came to therapy
- What you’re looking for in a therapist
- Your goals throughout the therapy process
You’ll work with your therapist to decide your next steps and establish a timeline for how often you want to attend your online therapy sessions.
Therapists typically recommend meeting on a weekly basis or once every two weeks to begin, then having longer times in between sessions as you continue to make process.
What Issues Can Online Therapy Help With?
Online therapy can help with many of the same issues as in-person therapy, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship issues.
Online therapists may use approaches from:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Psychodynamic Therapy
- Existential Therapy
Many of the approaches used in person can still be used online – including more “hands-on” techniques like EMDR.
While online therapy is often as effective as in-person therapy, it is not the best choice for more complex or severe mental health issues.
Pros: Is Online Therapy the Right Choice for You?
Online therapy is a great choice if you’re looking for a convenient and comfortable therapy choice.
Online therapy can be a great choice if:
- You want to avoid commuting to therapy
- You want to expand your options when choosing a therapist
- You enjoy the convenience of attending therapy from wherever you want
- You have accessibility needs that make attending in-person therapy challenging
Cons: Is In-Person Therapy the Better Option For You?
Online therapy is a great option – but in-person therapy may be the better option for you.
Online therapy may not be the right choice if:
- You’d prefer the privacy of a therapist’s office
- You really value in-person connection and want to feel the “energy” your therapist brings to sessions
- You’re experiencing a mental health challenge that is more complex or could require you to need access to crisis supports
What are Online Therapy “Dealbreakers?”
Online therapy isn’t for everyone, and it likely won’t work for you if you aren’t able to create a suitable therapy environment.
Online therapy dealbreakers include:
- You don’t have a reliable internet connection
- You don’t have a comfortable place to do your therapy sessions
- There’s nowhere you can speak in your home without being overheard
If you’re really interested in online therapy, but you’re worried about any of the above challenges, don’t be afraid to ask questions on how to make it work.
Speaking to a therapist or client coordinator can be incredibly helpful in determining what will work for you.
