Dialectical Behaviour Therapy in Toronto
It can be hard to feel like your emotions are controlling you.
You react on your first instinct, say things you didn’t mean to, and end up feeling regretful and ashamed once you have time to reflect.
It’s normal and human to have moments where your emotions get the best of you. But if it’s becoming a pattern, it’s not something you have to continue to struggle through alone.
What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy?
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that was designed to help you regain control over your emotional responses.
While it was first created to help people dealing with Borderline Personality Disorder, it has evolved to be helpful with a wide range of mental health concerns.
Dialectical behaviour can help with issues including:
- Substance misuse
- Eating disorders
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Trauma
The main goal of DBT is to help you learn tools to manage emotional dysregulation.
How Does DBT Work?
Dialectical behaviour therapy focuses on four modules: Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Your therapist will guide you through these modules to help you learn more about connecting to the present moment, equip you with skills to build tolerance to overwhelming situations, and support you in creating strong and supporting interpersonal relationships.
Learn more about what happens during each module by reading What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy? (The Pros and Cons)
