Have you been wondering about the differences between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist? Well, you can find out here on the KMA Therapy Blog!

Many individuals want to or try to seek help for their emotional conflicts however, many of those individuals do not know what type of expert will help them with their need. If you want to learn which expert will help you best with your issue continue reading.

Psychiatrists and psychologists can practice psychotherapy and they can also do research. Both of these careers contain specialists who treat their clients mental health. This is done by doing assessments of the client's emotional issues and treating those problems. Both areas, psychiatry and psychology have to go through formal educational training, and these areas almost have the same number of years.

Now let's start talking about the subject "Psychiatrist vs. Psychologist: What's the Difference?".

Although there are similarities between the two professional careers, there are many differences. Psychologists and psychiatrists may almost have the same amount of years for formal educational training, but, during those years they have specialized training as well as, different focus approaches and treatment concepts.

Psychologist's who can practice their area legally are required to have a masters degree (minimum) and a doctoral degree in the subject area, psychology.

Individuals who want to become psychologist's are at university around six to ten years. They learn specific training about how people feel, behave and think. Person(s) who graduate and have the credential, licensed, to practice in Canada most likely would have had training in counselling psychology, clinical neuropsychology, educational psychology or clinical psychology during university. Many of this type of professionals are not licensed in specific specialty areas and are supposed to stay within their competence level. However, Psychiatrists are more known as doctors. They go to medical school and obtain their medical degree and then they go into the field of mental health and disorders. They have specialized in mental disorders and health. This type of profession allows the expert to treat their client with medication in order to keep the client's disorder stabilized.

By the end of every individual's education that is in either psychology or psychiatry will learn that: Psychologists are more about the human mind, such as how individuals feel and how they show it through their behaviour, however, psychiatrists are more about, how medicine can help treat a patient's mental stability while doing therapy.

Basically, to keep it short, Psychiatrists can practice medicine legally while psychologists can't.

Psychiatrists and psychologists are known to be the most commonly used treatment for people with mental issues. Many individual's that are psychiatrists or psychologists, end up becoming psychotherapists.

We hope you learned which expert will suit you the best at KMA Therapy!
