5 Ways to Take Care of Your Mental Health

Try out these five ways to support your mental health.

1. Open up to someone you trust

When you’re struggling with your mental health, it’s easy to feel isolated and lonely.

You might feel like you’re the only one who understands what you’re going through.

Opening up to someone you trust can remind you that you’re not alone - even if someone isn’t experiencing the exact same thing as you, connecting with others can help you remember you’re not alone and help you feel less overwhelmed.

2. Be intentional about how you consume media

Every time you pick up your phone, there are countless channels of information coming your way.

You might go to send your friend a quick text message - only to find yourself spending 45 minutes scrolling through social media.

It’s important to stay informed, but that doesn’t mean you need to be online 24/7.

Setting intentional time limits and engaging with reliable sources can help you stay informed without feeling completely overwhelmed.

3. Access professional mental health support

Our friends and family can be great resources, but they don’t have to be your only form of support.

If you think you could benefit from speaking to a therapist, it’s worth it to explore therapy.

If financial barriers are an issue, try exploring things like insurance-covered therapy, sliding-scale therapy, or free online resources.

Many therapy clinics and mental health centres offer blogs, webinars, guides, and other online tools that can support you.

4. Take breaks when you need them

It’s okay to slow down.

It’s easy to feel like you’ll fall behind if you take a day off, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Let yourself rest without feeling guilty about it.

Building small moments of rest into your day can also make a big difference - try taking a walk outside during your lunch break, or listening to music while checking tasks off your to-do list.

5. Prioritize your needs

Whether you need to adjust your sleep schedule or move your body more, work on prioritizing your overall wellness.

Setting up a strong foundation for yourself is a great way to slowly improve your mental health.

Eating foods that nourish your body, moving in ways that feel good to you, and making time for the things (and people) you love can all boost your wellness.

You deserve to make yourself a priority.
